Radio Caroline has been confirmed as the latest addition to the Stoke and Newcastle Small Scale DAB Multiplex. Now a licensed broadcaster, the legendary one-time pirate station is the latest channel to be provided. The launch coincides with Radio Caroline’s annual four-day fundraiser which includes a range of programming live from the famed Caroline radio ship, the Ross Revenge, which is being broadcast on sister station, Radio Caroline North.
ABC Director Steve Perry commented, “I’ve been blown away by amount of love for Radio Caroline in Stoke and Newcastle. The news leaked out and, even before the station started, we were getting giddy messages from Caroline fans across North Staffordshire excited about the launch! It makes sense as there wasn’t any commercial radio available in Stoke until the 80’s. Prior to that BBC Radio 1’s signal in the area was poor and so Caroline was a lifeline to a generation of local pop/rock music radio listeners.”
The Stoke and Newcastle Multiplex launched last month and after a successful period of test transmissions has been gradually adding channels to its network. Listeners have already been enjoying the return of the local radio legends that make up the team at Blue Sky Radio since its launch in July. It was followed soon after by the fresh sounds of xRhythms, a station provided by local media group Cross Rhythms which was also behind the UK’s first FM Community Radio Station which launched in Stoke in 2002.
Steve continued, “We have a number of stations lined up to commence broadcasts in the coming weeks and months but we’d love to hear from other stations interested reaching the 300,000+ people across North Staffordshire.”
